CEHHS Participates in the DACTM/MDSTA Fall Conference

WARREN, MI - Elizabeth Morden staffed the College of Education, Health and Human Services (CEHHS) table at the 2016 Fall Conference for the Metropolitan Detroit Science Teachers Association (MDSTA) and the Detroit Area Council of Teachers of Mathematics (DACTM) on Saturday, November. 5, 2016.

The event was held at Cousino High School in Warren, MI. Liz greeted many area teachers and shared information on CEHHS graduate and doctoral programs. Several alumni stopped by the table to catch up on new program offerings including the STEM2 certificates.

 Jeff has been using GLOBE's activities which address scientific topics related to the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and soil/pedosphere with his middle school science students in the Gibraltar School District.

CEHHS Student Internship Opportunities with Quicken Loans

DETROIT, MI - Dr. Susan Everett, Chair of the Department of Education, and Dr. Stein Brunvand, Director of Master’s Degree Programs for the College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS), met with representatives from Quicken Loans on October 14, 2016 to learn more about their student internship programs.

Cecil Johnson, University Relations Manager at Quicken Loans, shared information about the wide range of paid internship opportunities including those in training and curriculum development, instructional technology, assessment and evaluation and marketing.

Training consultants Emily Bliss and Christopher Carline encouraged students from a variety of majors to apply including instructional technology majors and teacher certification students.  Internships are available during the fall, winter and summer.

Dr. Everett and Dr. Brunvand were able to tour some of the Quicken Loans owned properties in downtown Detroit to learn about the culture and climate of the work environment where interns are placed. Interns gain real world experience by working on authentic tasks with a designated team at Quicken Loans.

The internships also include opportunities to learn about city, participate in volunteer activities in the community and enjoy many of the wonderful events that downtown Detroit offers.

  The sounds of singing, drumming and laughter of children could be heard throughout the University Center, as the Very Special Arts (VSA) returned for their annual festival in early May of this year.

VSA Festival Chair, Jody Conrad Stark, states “Since 2013, UM-Dearborn staff and student volunteers have embraced our vision ‘to create an inclusive society where persons with disabilities participate in, learn through, excel in and enjoy the arts’ and have provided a welcoming environment for our 150 participants.”

 

Special Education instructors bring their students to the
VSA Festival for a day of arts experiences

Entering its 25th year, the VSA Festival is an annual event where “Special Education Instructors throughout Southeast Michigan (as far as Kalamazoo) bring their students for a day of arts experiences and performances” states Stark.    The festival, which was proudly supported by the Office of the Chancellor and the College of Education, Health, and Human Services, consisted of music, dance, theatre performances, as well as experiential art activities such as drumming, make and take artwork and mural painting.

Visitors to the College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS) will notice new art placed in the recently remodeled student study spaces (former phone booth areas).  The art work is the creation of students attending the 2015 VSA Festival and displays the beauty and imagination of the students.

Jonathan Larson, CEHHS Advisor, states “Being the VSA onsite liaison for the past 4 years has been a rewarding and highly motivational experience.  The artwork CEHHS displayed has created several exciting conversations with CEHHS students, faculty and staff regarding the festival and the creativity of the student participants.”

Appointments of CEHHS Directors

Dean Janine Janosky and the College of Education, Health, and Human Services is pleased to announce the following administrative reappointments, effective as of 1 July 2016.

Martha Adler, Ph.D.
 

Dr. Adler has been reappointed for a second term of two years as the Director of Field Placement for the College of Education, Health, and Human Services.  This office handles all field placements for the college.

Bonnie Beyer, Ed.D. 

Dr. Beyer has been re-appointed for another year as Co-Director of the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)  program. The program offers concentration areas in educational leadership, curriculum and practice, and metropolitan education. Dr. Beyer's specialties are in educational leadership and educational leadership certification.

Stein Brunvand, Ph.D.
 

Dr. Brunvand, has been reappointed for a second term of two years as the Director of Master’s Degree Programs for the College of Education, Health, and Human Services.  This position oversees admissions, advising, marketing and program development of all Master’s degrees for the college.

Christopher Burke, Ph.D.

Dr. Burke has been re-appointed for another year as Co-Director of the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)  program. The program offers concentration areas in educational leadership, curriculum and practice, and metropolitan education. In the next year the program is looking forward to developing a new concentration in coordination with the Department of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Everett, has been reappointed for a three year term as Chair of the Department of Education. In the next term, two areas of focus for the department will include strategic planning and national accreditation.




Through the leadership of Drs. Adler, Beyer, Brunvand, Burke, and Everett there has been much growth in the College of Education, Health, and Human Services, success for our students, and metropolitan impact for our region. We congratulate and show appreciation to these dedicated faculty members for their contributions to the college.

CEHHS Welcomes New Doctoral Students

DEARBORN, MI - On June 22, 2016 the College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS) hosted a welcome orientation for the incoming Fall 2016 cohort of Doctoral Students. This is the 8th cohort admitted to the College.

The goal of the event was to welcome the incoming doctoral students, provide them with an overview of the program, meet and interact with their advisors and other college faculty and have a chance to meet other new students.

Five newly admitted EdD students came to the orientation and they were welcomed by the Dean of the College, Janine Janosky; and Bonnie Beyer and Chris Burke, directors of the Doctoral Program. During the session, the new EdD students had the chance to interact with four faculty members (Dara Hill, Mesut Duran, Danielle Defaw and Paul Fossum) and staff members from different areas such as Library (Carla Brooks), Enrollment Management (Ryan Rafko), ITS (Laura Shelp), CEHHS Office of Student Success (Joan Otlewski) and a student from Cohort 5 of the EdD Program (Gloria Davis).

 The event was a positive welcome and introduction to the program for the new group of incoming students.  They were able to meet faculty and their peers in the program. The students were very enthusiastic and they all exchanged contact information and have even formed a group text to stay in touch.

With this 8th cohort of students admitted to the program, the total number of admitted students increases to 77. So far, CEHHS has had 16 students who successfully complete the program.

Chris Burke, one of the program directors was grateful for the opportunity to meet with the incoming doctoral students. He said, "They are a highly accomplished diverse group of professionals that will be a vital part of our program. I was excited to see that they were all exchanging contact information so that they could connect with each other over the summer. I believe that they will be a strong and cohesive cohort"

UM-Dearborn faculty and students explore new opportunities with Southwest Detroit Schools

DETROIT.- On Friday, May 13, 2016, faculty and students from UM-Dearborn College of Education, Health, and Human Services enjoyed a delightful and informative morning as they went on a tour exploring the vibrant community of Southwest Detroit while visiting its most well-known public schools.

Associate Professor Martha Adler, Director of the Field Placement program in the college (CEHHS), decided to organize the tour to make faculty and students alike knowledgeable of the neighboring, largely Hispanic community, to UM-Dearborn. Even though there are some students who are already doing their practicums in some of these schools, the goal is to increase the college's presence in SW Detroit through more practicum placements and student teaching.

A year ago, UM-Dearborn and Southwest Solutions joined together to bring both communities closer and therefore, mutually benefit from each other’s assets. Ines De Jesus, coordinator of Community Schools program at Southwest Solutions, was the tour guide who led the group through the city's Hispanic neighborhood making stops at area public schools such as Bennett Elementary School and Western International High School.

De Jesus said that the objective of this tour is to show this neighborhood from a different perspective away from what is shown in the newspapers and on TV, but from a positive view as to engage UM-Dearborn students so they may be inspired to get involved in the local schools.

The group made its first stop at Bennett Elementary School which is well known for the quality of its teaching staff and which is working closely with CEHHS in the revival and upgrade of their library. Community School Site Coordinator at Bennett Kaity Nicastri who is part of the School Library Project, was the host during the walk-through of the Pre-K-5 facility.

On the way to the second scheduled visit, the group drove by Neinas Elementary School in which Associate Professor Chris Burke and his class are working on transforming empty lots into gardens. The group was also able to see other schools such as Harms Elementary School, a Michigan Department of Education "beat the odds" school. Clippert Academy Middle School well known for its professional staff and high achieving students; Academy of Americas K-8 known for its very committed parents and professional staff trained in full dual language Spanish-English immersion programs.

 

Inside Western International High School

The next stop was at Western International High School, the largest public school in the community with approximately 1700 students and offering a variety of extra-curricular programs in music, arts and sports. The group was able to see the well-kept facilities like the Olympic size swimming pool, the Henry Ford Health Clinic offering full services, the auditorium and the recently renovated performing arts and athletic wings. A third stop was at the recently opened Academy of Americas High School located next to St. Anne de Détroit Catholic church, which expands dual language opportunities for students in Spanish and English.

There were also some surprising visits that helped the group experience how engaged and bustling this community really is. Stops at the Ford Resource and Engagement Center as well as the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation showed that Southwest Detroit is committed to a better way of life.

The group returned satisfied with positive comments about the experience. UM-Dearborn student Josselyn Gorman said the tour was "really informative as far as knowing how the community ties in with schools". Professor Danielle DeFauw said, "I just feel like there are so many people making such a difference and I cannot wait to collaborate with these individuals and continue to help push our students out of their comfort zone" and Professor Margaret Rathouz referred to Southwest Detroit schools as "the hub of the whole community" while Professor Chris Burke called it an "informative, inspirational and fun tour".

Overall, all participants were inspired with this community looking forward to expand projects in partnership with Southwest Detroit schools.

Dean Janosky is invited to the White House

DEARBORN, MI - Janine Janosky PhD, Dean of the College of Education, Health, and Human Services has been honored with an invitation to participate on a panel at the White House on Thursday April 7, 2016.

The White House Domestic Policy Council will host a five-part series entitled, "Making Health Care Better" as part of the World Health Organization's World Health Day 2016. The purpose is to highlight the significant progress made in improving the health system over the past seven years. The first event in this series will focus on advancements in diabetes prevention, research, and quality of care, and coverage.
 

The activities of this day will include an interview with Dr. Griffin Rodgers, Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and three panel discussions. Dean Janosky will participate on the panel discussion "Healthy Lifestyle". The group of panelists include:

This is not the first time for Dean Janosky at the White House.  Three years ago, while serving as the Vice President and Head of the Center for Community Health Improvement at the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron, she was honored as a Champion of Change:Prevention and Public Health.

The event will be held on Thursday April 7, 2016 with the panel discussion scheduled for 3:45pm-4:20pm. The entire event runs 2:00pm-4:30pm and will be streamed on the CEHHS website.

Power in Community: MLK Day of Service 2016

DEARBORN, MI - For the 23rd year, UM-Dearborn celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by hosting the MLK Day of Service on January 18, 2016.

This is one of the biggest and more cherished campus traditions in which faculty, staff, students and alumni from UM-Dearborn in partnership with Henry Ford College, get together to spend a morning of work to lend a helping hand to more than 20 community service organizations throughout Metro Detroit.

Jonathan Larson, Academic Advisor of the College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS) has been part of the MLK Day of Service Committee since 2008, serving as Chair of the Committee for the last four years. He lead the planning of this day that usually begins in April and continues through the Day of Service in January.

Larson mentioned that "This year we worked with 20 different community agencies including Fish and Loaves, Cass Community Services, Michigan Urban Farming Initiative and Priest Elementary School".

Chancellor Daniel Little welcomed volunteers to campus before they embarked on their service activities such as packing food for Kids Against Hunger; cleaning areas at Blight Busters; working with Michigan Urban Farming Initiative; organize donations at South Oakland Shelter; painting buildings at Franklin Wright Settlement or sorting food at Fish & Loaves.

"It fills my heart with pride every time I see young people… give a day of service to contribute to the betterment of our region", Little said.

There were nearly 500 volunteers this year who despite the frigid temperatures decided to honor Dr. King's words: "If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way."

UMD Collaborates with Beaumont Health on Autism Center

1 in 68 American children have been
identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one-in-68 American children have been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Statistics like this one and the growing need for specialized care is what prompted the University of Michigan-Dearborn to utilize its already-existing partnership with Beaumont Health to create the new autism center.

closely involved in the development of this center which is expected to be open in the Fall of 2016.

 Professor David Hill, Phd in Special Education, plays an important role in the educational aspects of the new center. He explains that there are two sides to the center.

“The first one is the medical side,” Hill said. “They [medical personnel] diagnose and treat disorders. The second side is the educational side. We in education do not diagnosis children with autism. Medical personnel are the only ones allowed to diagnose.”

serving as a Special Education Consultant to the Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) where the new center will be located. She explains that, “The center will start with three classrooms. Each classroom will hold approximately thirty children and each child will have one RBT (registered behavior technician) assigned to them”.

The cost to families utilizing the center’s programs will be relatively low. Any medical aspects will be billed towards the appropriate medical insurances. Once patients become eligible for K-12 schooling, they can move into the classroom depending on need, for free.

CEHHS and Dearborn City Schools partner in English Language Arts project

DEARBORN, MI - CEHHS faculty member, Dr. Martha Adler was awarded a grant by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) to lead the project Improving Teacher Quality: Academic Competence and Language Proficiency for ALL.

This project, in partnership with Dearborn City Schools, was designed to provide teachers with the knowledge and strategies to design and implement lessons that address language acquisition and reading comprehension.
MDE has identified Dearborn City Schools eligible for this grant due to its over 72% district-wide poverty rate and its 9,006 underrepresented English-language learner student population. The project will provide 90 hours of professional learning to 30 participating teachers (15 in grades K-5 and 15 in grades 7-12) through coursework that can be applied toward the MDE English as a Second Language endorsement.

During the 2015-2016 year, the project will provide two 3-credit hour courses in a workshop format: The first course, Aligning Reading Theory and Best Practice to Curriculum and Instruction started in August 2015 and the second one, Second Language Teaching: K12 starts in January 2016. Both courses address student diversity, differing skill sets, background knowledge, and English language proficiencies.
The UM-Dearborn team includes three faculty members: Dr. Martha Adler, expert in Language Arts and ESL; Dr. Jaime S. Lee, expert in Second Language Acquisition and Dr. Laura Reynolds, expert in Assessment and Evaluation.
This project is another example of UM-Dearborn College of Education, Health and Human Services' commitment to support stronger outreach programs in local communities.

CEHHS offers three new certificate programs

The University of Michigan-Dearborn College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS) has launched three new certificate programs for both current students and professionals looking to refine their skills.

I. Certificates in Addiction Studies,
II. Teaching English to Students of Other Languages (TESOL)
III. STEM2 now are available for enrollment. 

I. Addiction Studies Certificate
 Julie Roddy, chair of the Department of Health and Human Services, said the certificate courses will look at addiction from both the medical/health side and the criminal justice side.

The Addiction Studies Certificate program will provide instruction in the role of medicine in addiction, substance abuse identification methodologies, substance abuse treatment modalities and substance abuse prevention strategies. There is a specific emphasis on treatment availability within Detroit.

II. TESOL Certificate
The Teaching English to Students of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate program is for those who want to teach the English language—both locally and internationally—to those outside of the Pre-Kindergarten to 12 public school system.

III. STEM2 Certificates
The STEM2 Certificate program is a collaborative program between the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services to provide opportunities for students to further their knowledge and skills in STEM2—science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.

Susan Everett, chair of the Department of Education, said she noticed a need for a formalized program while conducting STEM-focused workshops and having educators ask her questions.

Three STEM2 certificate programs are available: 

1) A Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Certificate 
2) A certificate of K-8 Teaching of STEM2.
3) A Graduate Certificate of STEM2.

CEHHS students help with public health needs in Detroit

Several College of Education, Health, and Human Services students spent their summer helping Detroit citizens lead healthier lives by doing internships at public health organizations—including Karly Koos at Healthy Detroit and Gadah Sharif at Authority Health, which was formerly known as Detroit Wayne County Health Authority.

Julie Roddy, chair of UM-Dearborn’s Department of Health and Human Services, said internships are important because they connect students to work experience—and, even more importantly, to the people.

Sharif, a junior majoring in health policy studies, got interested in the health field at a young age. Now works at a doctor's office and her desire to be by the side of those in need made her spent her summer as an intern at Authority Health.

“I love my job, but I felt a need to find out what’s going on in a patient’s life beyond the office setting", Sharif said.

During her internship, Sharif did a comparative community health needs assessment of Detroit-area hospitals and analyzed transportation and food needs of the people being served by Wayne County public health offices, local nonprofit organizations and more.

Koos, a senior majoring in public health, wants to improve health outcomes for Detroit residents too.

Through her internship with Healthy Detroit, she helped implement the Detroit Health Park initiative, did outreach to let residents know about Healthy Detroit Days and worked on the Healthy Detroit Passport app, which allows residents to track their participation in these events and gave them incentives to stay active.

“Interning with Healthy Detroit gave me a better idea of the big picture of public health than I would have gotten anywhere else in the country.", Koos said.

CEHHS 2014 Ed.D. Alum Speaks As Keynote At 34th Annual Arab Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers Conference

Christopher W. Tremblay, Ed.D., 2014 graduate of the College of Education and Health and Human Services doctoral program, recently was invited and participated in the 34th Annual Arab Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers (Arab ACRAO)  conference in the United Arab Emirates on the campus of the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU).   Dr. Tremblay shared research from his  dissertation study on graduate certificate  programs in college admission counseling.   He kicked off the entire conference with a  keynote addressed that highlighted  innovations in college admissions and registration. Tremblay also delivered a break-out session which introduced conference attendees to more than 30  certification options that have emerged in the various  disciplines of and in enrollment and management.
