 ABU DHABI, UAE - Janine Janosky, Dean of UM-Dearborn College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS) was invited as keynote speaker to the "2nd World Congress on Nursing" that took place on November 28-30, 2016  in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The three-day congress was aimed to all healthcare professionals and this year the discussions were around the shift in medicine and healthcare from management of disease to promoting wellness, as well as how caring for families in nursing practice can improve patient care outcomes and community health in general.

Dean Janosky's participation was on Day 1: November 28. The title of her keynote presentation was "Population and community health-centered innovations for workforce preparation and public health and healthcare systems".

The focus of her presentation was on the development and implementation of higher education health and wellness population and community-centered academic education and training programs for workforce preparation.

She provided context for the interrelationships of concomitant determinants and interactions that together impact wellness and good health, the need for workforce preparation, the benefits and challenges of these programmatic approaches, as well as anticipated near future careers and professions.

This is the second year that Dean Janosky is invited to participate on this world congress that brings together specialists from more than 20 countries around the globe.

The College of Education, Health, and Human Services Receives a Federal Grant

DEARBORN, MI - The College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS) received funding of $290,684 from the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to develop a suite of academic certificate programs for behavioral and mental health careers.

This grant provides funding through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as the Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) program.

“The Administration is committed to ensuring that Americans of all ages have access to quality mental health and substance abuse services,” said HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell. “These grants are an important step toward that goal by creating an educational pipeline for future behavioral health providers so people in need can get the care they deserve.”

CEHHS applied for this grant over last summer. The overall goal of the award is to train 125 paraprofessionals through a sustainable suite of certificate programs. CEHHS has been developing a comprehensive system of interlocking certificates focused on the paraprofessional level of behavioral and mental health careers.

"This award, through HRSA, provides the opportunity for CEHHS to finalize the development of the IMPACT Certificate Program", explained CEHHS dean Janine Janosky. "This will allow CEHHS and UM-Dearborn to lead in not only offering in-demand programs to our students, but also to fill much needed gaps in available mental health professionals in our region through immediate employability and economic mobility for students."

This program development focuses on the next cluster of certificates, the IMPACT Certificate Program, which will prepare individuals for paraprofessional careers in behavioral and mental health as well as entry into bachelor’s degree programs. With this HRSA funding, CEHHS will develop courses and build a system of certificates using four common core courses that are followed by focused courses tailored toward one of four certificates: Social Service Technician, Child Life Assistant, Psychiatric Technician, and Mental Health Technician.

This funding will allow CEHHS to:

1. recruit,support, and train 125 paraprofessionals;
2. further expand its community partnerships to ensure field placements, career development, and job placement for its students; and
3. evaluate and report on the program outcomes and impact.

Associate Dean Laura Reynolds explains, “This grant will allow CEHHS to expand the College’s contribution to the metropolitan community by providing access to training for individuals in high-need behavioral and mental health fields at the paraprofessional level.  Through this grant, individuals will be able to increase their economic and professional capacity, while at the same time providing much needed services in behavioral and mental health in southeastern Michigan.”

With CEHHS’ experience delivering certificate courses to students, this is an opportunity for students to secure high paying employment situations that will improve the health of Southeastern Michigan through working with at-risk children, adolescents, and transitional-age youth.

The certificate courses have an emphasis on prevention, intervention and approaches for those at risk of developing mental and substance uses disorders as well as involving families in the prevention and treatment of behavioral health conditions.

UMD-CEHHS Addiction Studies Certificate teaches students how to educate and heal

DEARBORN, MI - The UMD College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS) is pleased with the recently released Addiction Studies Certificate program in this academic year.

The 18-credit program prepares students for work in the field of substance abuse, like counselors, researchers, criminal justice professionals and clinical supervisors. And upon completion of the program, recovering students will be equipped to apply for certification as a peer mentor.

She said the program engages with the Detroit Metropolitan community by having students and community members learn from each other and giving educational tools for this issue.

“We experience all of the ailments associated with substance use in our region and most of our students stay local. They are going to be out in our neighborhoods. It’s important that we train our students on how to be compassionate and on how to help,” said Roddy, who mentioned that the class is at capacity.

Lecturer Ural Hill, a 1983 UM-Dearborn alumnus who is licensed professional counselor from the Detroit-based Self Help Abuse Rehabilitation (SHAR) organization and his own private practice, said he’s honored to teach the inaugural class for the certificate. He shared with his students how essential this work is.

“As Detroit experiences it’s rebirth we will need a mentally healthy, sober and high functioning populace.

We need a new generation of dedicated addiction professionals to prevent, treat and educate Detroiters about substance abuse to promote optimal health,” said Hill, who’s worked in academia for 25 years and has served a social worker in Detroit.

Joe Popa, a student of Hill's class, is a Marine veteran who has been in recovery for substance abuse. Popa said he’s doing well in his sobriety and wants to help, especially because the justice system is starting to move from incarceration to the rehabilitation process.

“People struggle because they can’t find the right kind of treatment or the right doctor. I’ve been there,” he said. “I want to help people get back on track. Getting connected to the right support gives you that chance for a new life.”

CEHHS participating partner with Crain's Business for 2015 Health Care Leadership Summit

DETROIT, MI - The University of Michigan Dearborn College of Education, Health and Human Services (CEHHS) was proud to participate as an event sponsor of the 2015 Health Care Leadership Summit presented by Crain's Detroit Business. The summit was held at the Marriott Renaissance Center in Detroit, MI on October 28, 2015.

The primary focus of this year's summit was the importance of providing consumers and employers the necessary data needed to make smart decisions in health care along with how Michigan's health insurers, hospitals and consulting firms are addressing this important issue.

CEHHS participated in this event by providing information to the attendees about the programs that the college offers centered on areas of health including best practices in preventive healthcare that is facing America's communities.
